Moose Head Linocut, 7 out of 30

Moose Head Print

This is one weird looking moose, more like a moose mask on a bear body. Today is the first day I missed my 8pm EST deadline. I was rushing to carve this block, give the dogs at least a 4 mile walk, then run  5 miles myself, and drive 87 miles to get more printing paper. Something had to give.

I got home with an hour to finish. I went into the dark studio with nothing but a headlamp. The studio is primitive, no electricity, no heat, just mud and rocks and glorious windows to aid in the passive solar.  I made a few proofs under my headlamps and decided to come back into the house to carve some more. My ink was hard in the cold and clumping up, and frankly too dark to see.

So this guy is just a preview, a “proof” print, not the final. He needs to get a few things straightened out, but that is the way with relief printing. You think your block is done, and good, but when you ink it up you see what you are missing or what you want to change. Tonight I will spend the evening changing it up and the final version will be available tomorrow, along with tomorrow’s new print. Hummmm, what should that be?

If your suggestion is selected, I will send you a free print. So fill out the comments with what you want to see carved. It can be anything. The catch is, I will not tell you what day your print is being made, so you have to check back.

Okay, more carving. See you tomorrow with the finished version.

Horse of Course, Print 5 out of 30

30 prints 30 days, Small Print Store

horse_framedIs this really only day 5 of 30? I am working my tail off and I am just getting started!  I was up past midnight packaging up prints, at the post office bright and early, then back home carving and printing so that I have time run before  4pm when it begins to get dark.

I am very excited to present you with a horse. Make fun of me all you want but today, according to Astrologer Susan Blair Hunt of Santa Fe, my spirit animal of the week is a Horse. What is the significance of a horse you ask? You can read all about it at Shamanismjourney, but the part that most resonates with me is, “People with Horse as power animal are fiercely independent and have little tolerance for anything or anyone that limits their free expression. They give us the safety of speed and the promise of adventure.”  So this week I am embracing my inner horse.

Horse Spirit Animal

Horse Spirit Animal

I always jokes that I was a horse in a former life, or perhaps a pack mule, as I can be incredibly stubborn with endless perseverance, especially when it comes to physical demand.

Today you get a horse for your 4″ x 6″ image printed onto 8″ x 10″ paper. In the edition of 10, you can get it at Etsy, It is only day 5, of my 30 prints in 30 days project, 25 more to go!

Also for those of you ordering multiple prints, please send me a message so that I can adjust the postage before you purchase. You do not need to add it in twice!

Show Complete

Uncategorized

What a fantastic three months. Here are three parting photography of my Wave Hill exhibition. The wall of leaves got packed down to one plastic tub, the bears, coyote, and lean-to rolled up, and the plants piled up. The result; a clean and clear gallery for the upcoming artist in residence. Check out the opportunities folks!

The work from the Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs is down, with some of the pieces still available through Saatchi Art Gallery On-line. You can check that out.

What is ahead? I am working on an edition of 30 prints for a portfolio entitled “Vinyl” curated by Anita Jung to be shown at the Southern Graphics International Conference and collected by Bernard A. Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University. I am also working on pieces for an exhibition at the Courthouse Gallery, Lake George, NY.  And I just got awarded a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Process Space residency on Governors Island for Winter/Spring 2016.
As a Process Space participant, I will receive:

  • A dedicated  studio space, within a larger shared space, for five months;
  • Access to resources like Materials for the Arts and LMCC Staff assistance;
  • Audience development opportunities through Open Studios;
  • Publicity through LMCC’s website as well as its digital communication channels.

In 2016 I will also be jurying the members exhibition for the Printmaking Center of NJ. So I am looking pretty good for 2015 and 2016. I still have a few grant applications out there and I am always looking for new opportunities, but on this day, Winter Solstice 2014, things are looking really bright.

Drawing #20 Done!

Uncategorized
"Shine On" watercolor and collage 10" x 14"

“Shine On” watercolor and collage 10″ x 14″

Spirit animal of the week? That’s right, it is the firefly. This is watercolor collage drawing #20, it will be sent to the framers to meet the other 19 tomorrow. It is a real wacky one, the fireflies  are hand colored linoleum block prints  slightly raised off the surface of the paper as it they are flying. Super Cool! These fireflies are here to remind you to, “shine your light.”

Two pieces have already sold from my studio. They will still be in the exhibition for all to see. These smart collectors knew to buy one now because once at the gallery with the commissions added on, the price rises, and then only climb for there.  So if you even think you might want one, talk to me now. hilary@hilarylorenz.com

Drawings Shipped to Framer, Lean-to close to done.

Drawing
8' x 6' Ink drawing of Lean-to by Hilary Lorenz

8′ x 6′ Ink drawing of Lean-to by Hilary Lorenz

My lean-to ink drawing is  on it’s way to completion. This will be going into my exhibition at Wave Hill in October. It is big, about 8 feet long and I hope to have it done in the next couple of days. On Friday I shipped all 19 drawings (the of which are already sold!)  to the framer. I have the best framing in the world, Rabbet Art Gallery in New Brunswick, NJ. Dot, always takes great care of my artwork. I went to a few framers in Santa Fe,  but I decided to keep loyal to Rabbet. I am completely confident that they will frame it and have it waiting for me at the Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs when I get there on October 2.

I had the chance to hike and run last weekend. A friend and I went to Chicoma Mountain, highest peak in the Jemez Mountains, no trail and a 26 mile forest road to drive in on  made it a great adventure. The highlight of the day was seeing an Elk. Funny thing is, the prior week an Elk was my spirit animal.  The day before the hike I went on a run along the Rio Grande Gorge from Pillar to the Taos Bridge, stopped 3 miles short of the bridge. I ended with 16 miles, but it was a rough run. It should have been easy but with all the direct sunlight it was  just too hot for me.

Today everything is bright and beautiful here in Abiquiu, NM, three more weeks and I start my drive east for all these shows. Until then, you will find me in my studio.

Last few days of August

Drawing

It is the 28th of August and I have 19 watercolor drawing collages complete. I just finished  two today.
Hilary_Lorenz_Drawing_18
My spirit animal of the week is a red lizard. Very appropriate. I see dozens of lizards every day in New Mexico’s high desert. Curiously, the lizard helps us see the importance of respecting and remembering our dreams. I am not sure how I feel about that given the dreams I had this week. Lizards also aid us in becoming more detached from situations in your life. This I certainly need as I have had three months of crushing grief from the co-op board of my NYC apartment. As I finished the lizard drawing today, the crying house, the lizard losing it tail, I had to laugh at the simplicity of it all. This Lizard is said to be telling me to move on and quit being attached to what has been. Lizard is proposing immediate change in one or more areas of my life. So,  that must mean only one thing. I have an apartment for sale! So long Rivington Street and Lower East Side and good riddance to the noise and the sad souls of the building, though the good souls I will miss!  This someone has something far more wonderful happening and a big bright wonderful world to step out into! Just follow the lizard! Who can resist a red lizard that just shed it’s tail?
