Happy New Year!

January 1, 2016 – Cows, #30paintingsin30days

One year ago today I began my 30 prints in 30 days project, I created my Etsy store, my Stonetrigger Press FB page,  and I blogged every day with a new print. That project opened up a whole new world to me of collectors, friends, subject matter and courage. I had no idea what kind of courage it takes to make something every single day and put it out publicly whether I thought it was good enough or not, time was the determining factor and I only had one day.

I got an email two days ago about the 30 paintings in 30 days that got me started last year. Because the 30 days was not about making the perfect piece or coming up with the perfect solution, it was about showing up every single day, no matter what and making something. For me it is not about creating a habit, I have plenty of discipline, plus making art is what I love to do more than anything. The challenge was about holding myself to the task of making and showing a painting or print every single day, no matter what life throws in the way and knowing it is  good enough has more reward than one can know, until you do it yourself. So I encourage you, if you make drawings, paintings, whatever it may me, join me in the 30 days challenge.

And just  like  last year with the prints, I will offer each of these paintings on my Etsy Store.  There is only one, if you want it, don’t hesitate. At the end of 30 days, I will pick my favorite 12 to make note cards.

A Radical Change

Drawing, Prints, stonetrigger press

Red Hook
At the beginning of August I drove the 2100 miles back to NYC leaving behind my beautiful studio and embracing the big unknown. I had sold my apartment and was coming back to find a rental. I knew I wanted to live in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, an “industrial seaside town” as a friend calls it. Ideally I would find a place large enough to work in and still be affordable, by NYC standards that is. What I found was a home that makes me so happy, each day when I wake up I feel like my heart is going to burst out of my chest I love it so much.  I have huge windows, 1200 square feet, two floors and two bathrooms. It is really unbelievable to me.  I set up my work tables in front of the windows where I can see the expansive skyline.

I started working on a couple drawings. Of course I had a small coyote to add to this 7″ x 5″  collage.

Mostly I have been working on a moose print, 20″ x 15″ with a rainbow roll, and stencil. It is part of a portfolio project titled Western Communities, a collection of artist who live in the west.  I do not have a photo of the block or finished piece, just some of the process. I am also working on a custom print for my friend Kat in Cleveland.

When I am not working in the studio, I am walking miles each day with my dogs. We walk at least 4 hours a day, 2.5 in the morning and 1.5 at night, just exploring everywhere around our new home. Here are a few photos of our neighborhood discoveries.

I miss New Mexico but I am so happy with this change. I love change. I had sold all my furniture and had very little beyond my books. I am enjoying the process of recreating my life in Brooklyn….that is until next summer when I return to NM. You can expect all new projects, and all new artwork with new influences, my guess would be a lot of water.

Open Studio Pre-view

Drawing, Prints, stonetrigger press

Today is a photo extravaganza. This weekend is my Open Studio, from 11am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. I have been cleaning, hanging artwork, and building a small, but crazy printed paper installation. If you are in or around Abiquiu, please come and say “hi.”

GPS Location – 36°12’41.2″N 106°13’48.9″W
From SF, take 84 toward Abiquiu. On the corner of 554 (the El Rito Road) marked by Mamacita’s Pizza turn right. Drive just over 1/2 mile crossing the Chama River, turn right on CR142. Drive 1.1 mile. On your left is “Trigger Drive” turn left, drive 200 meters and the studio is on the right, #5.

Original Watercolor Collage, 7″ x 5″ Dancing Bear

Drawing
Original Watercolor, 5

Original Watercolor, 5″ x 7″ with Collage – Click to Purchase

This could be my favorite after the canoe. It is a weird and whacky dancing bear with a big coyote looking on from the side.

The bear is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. The coyote is a digital archival print that I had made for my image transfers onto journals, but instead he made it into this artwork.  The yellow-ish tan paper with red lines is at the bottom is  vintage Italian  paper. The brown paper with black lines is linoleum printed cut up and collages. I then hand drawn watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble  pigments.

Artwork comes unframed, this is only for reference.

This is what he would look like in a standard black wood frame. I think this is my favorite as it brings out the black of the bear.  But I also have an example in white. Frames are not included they are only for reference.

I like the white white frame. The dancing bear would look super cute in a paneled study, a kids room, a country house, cabin or urban chic apartment. It is perfect  for a wall that demands a smaller size artwork, image 7″ x 5″ displayed in a 12″ x 9″ frame. He is now available on my Etsy Store by clicking here.

Ah, the beaver, those semi-aquatic, primarily nocturnal rodents, master engineers that dam up rivers and streams sure are cute little critters. My dogs Conrad and Homer look very much like beavers when they are out swimming.

The beaver is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. I then hand drawn watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble  pigments. At the top are hand cut shapes from vintage Italian  paper.

Here is the green and yellow drawing in a white frame. He would look super cute in a kids room, a country house, your sea-side cottage, or a wall that demands a smaller size artwork, image 7″ x 5″ displayed in a 12″ x 9″ frame. He is now available on my Etsy Store by clicking here.

Sold-Original Watercolor with Linocut Collage, Canoe -30 Day Challenge – #6

Drawing
7" x 5" Original Watercolor Canoe, 30 Day Challenge

7″ x 5″ Original Watercolor Canoe, Click to Purchase

This canoe takes me immediately back to the Northeast and my fantasy to canoe the entire Hudson River. As a kid I used to peel the birch off the trees and attempt to fabricate a tiny birch bark canoe, it never worked. This canoe, while two dimensional, still takes me to that feeling of paddling down a wilderness river. The canoe is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. I then hand draw watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble pigments. At the top and bottom are stripes of vintage Italian hand printed paper that are then painted over. If you like wilderness water adventures, this 7″ x 5″ original watercolor is for you.

This is all part of my July 30 day watercolor challenge and it is a a fun challenge. It is exciting to have the pressure of getting each one made and working in such volume forces me to take some risks, and risk in art is always good! As usual this is available at my Stonetrigger Press Etsy Store.

He is back, Seamore the Red Eared Slider, but this time better than ever in an original watercolor drawing. Seamore is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. I then layer up hand drawn watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble resins, and pigments. On the right are two stripes of vintage Italian hand printed paper. He is gorgeous!
