LMCC Govenors Island Open Studio

LMCC Process Space, Uncategorized

studio_boats.jpgMemorial Day Weekend, May 28 and 29 marks the opening of Govenors Island to the public and the first of two open studios for us LMCC Artists in Building 110. Shuttle and all events are free.

I can’t honestly say I am looking forward to the island being open to the public every day, though our studios will remain closed except May 28/29 and June 25/26. I love the quiet ride on the ferry and being alone on the deck as we cross over New York harbor. I love my afternoon runs where I do not see another person. All that will change. I do not know how many people come to the island in the summer, but if this photo from the GI website is any indication, my days of isolation are over.
Govenors_island_people.jpgI have only been working 3 months, and I am not sure what my space will look like. I have three projects I am working on. My boats, in both paper and ceramic, an installation piece consisting of giant rabbits and a tent (I think that will be ready in June) and various collage and watercolor pieces that I  working on. I am confident though, my studio and my work will look good for the event.

My studio is truly a working studio and I am not treating it like an exhibition, as it is not yet in that state. I am excited to have friends come and to talk with the public, that is always important to me in my art making. I just want everyone to go home afterward. Except this one, she can stay as long as she likes…..Shelley, one of the best friends a person could have visiting from Michigan. Our photo from yesterday at Governors Island.  She requires a special shout-out. See you on the Island!
