Call for Participation!  Cut paper and/or printed moths – Deadline July 15, 2017

I was invited to create an installation for the exhibition titled, “Cross Pollination.” Curated by Valerie Roybal, with assistance from Claude Smith and independent curator Aimee Gwynne Franklyn at 516Arts, Albuquerque, NM Cross Pollination refers to how insects and other creatures pollinate plant life, but also to the cross pollination of ideas in art and science. I want to create an artwork using  moths, nocturnal pollinators, as the vehicle for the cross-pollination and systematic exchanges between people.

Anyone from around the world may participate by making paper cut out moths. Moth will be cataloged and attached to gallery walls and ceiling in a giant geographically accurate web. This web will trace the origin location to every participating person. The moths will “fly out” from Brooklyn, NY and “fly” from city to state to country tracing the “migration” pattern of people’s participation.

My goal is to create and attract at least 40,000 moths. The number derives from the number of moths a grizzly bear may eat per day prior to hibernation. What does the grizzly have to do with migration? Probably not a whole lot beyond intercepting the work of the moths by eating them all.

I am on TV!

I was excited to get the email asking if I wanted to be on TV. I would meet NY1’s Roger Clark at 6a.m. to do two live new spots at my exhibition in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The news team would then “package” together a segment that would replay all day.

The interview was great advertising for my second free workshop at the park. It will happen on November 19 from 1 to 3pm. You can click here for the details. Don’t let the “kid” workshop fool you, it is for everyone, 99 Plymouth Street, corner of Washington. It is just south of the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO. It is walking in and out any time.

To see my short interview you can click here.

It was loads of fun to be interviewed by Roger, he was amazing and make it easy. I didn’t tell him that I don’t own a TV. I never have.

Birding at BBP

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Saturday night I met with Da Ping Luo a great friend and amazing photographer at my public art exhibition at 99 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn Bridge Park. Da has shot my work in the past and not only does he document the work in a suburb manner, he shows me lines, forms, and images that I am not even aware of. He helps me make my work better. Of the 175 photos here are just a tiny few. My work is up until December 31 and I am doing two public workshops, one on November 19 the other on December 11.  Please come and visit.

LISTENING TO THE FOREST
Linoleum Block Printed and Cut Paper Installation

Hilary Lorenz translates the physical and visceral experience of hiking remote landscapes into visual imagery that takes the form of prints, drawings and enveloping installations. Grounded in traditions of performance walking, Lorenz’s artwork is shaped by the space she passes through during long-distance runs and mountain climbing. Her drawings and prints function as visual mapping specific to each location: abstract, intuitive time-lines that mark a spatial journey of memory and change. As the artist describes, “When I am carving a linoleum block I relive each step that I walked or ran through a single knife-cut.” Even the act of operating a manual printing press supports her strong passion for simple physical repetition.

For the Resnick Gallery, Lorenz continues to build on her previous artwork most recently shown at Wave Hill Public Gardens and Culture Center (2014) and The Lake George Art Projects (21015).

Lorenz begins each artwork with a hike or trail run through the mountains. She has explored Adirondack State Park’s numerous trails along with the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado, California, Australia, and Cameroon, Africa. Lorenz takes these wildlife explorations and turns them into room-size environment consisting of linoleum block-printed and cut paper that is collaged and layered to form mountain, animals and camp sites. Because the work documents her experiences, the artist is careful to portray only the mountains that she has hiked or climbed. The ink drawn animals serves as a record of Lorenz’s treks and simultaneously evokes a wilderness fantasy with bears, coyotes rabbits and moose. In this way, the artist attempts to represent a longing for solitude, quietness and rural moments in the big, bustling city.

After 40 hours of pasting cut paper onto the wall, one year of carving linoleum, printing it and cutting it into pieces, all of which were preceded by 100’s of miles of  mountains hiking and trail running in northern New York, New Mexico, Colorado, California, Tasmania and Cameroon the exhibition it up at Lake George Courthouse Gallery, Lake George, NY.

18_Hilary_Lorenz_Lake_George_Printmaking_InstallationEach cut paper installation I do, is build from previous hikes or trail runs from around the world. After running to the top of a particular mountain, I carve it. This keeps me fit, happy, traveling and constantly creating new work. On Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, my exhibition opened to a great crowd.

Carving animals that are unique to the region, I spent several days with my dogs in the gallery preparing for the opening on November 14, 2015. I could not have asked for a better reception. Friends drove or took the Amtrak the 200 miles from NYC, others drove 1-2 hours  across the Adirondacks to get there. I was thrilled to see my number one hiking partner and good friend, ADK Nancy, pictured here with me, who made an almost 2 hour drive. We met in a lean-to on a backpack adventure.
Adirondack_Nancy_Hilary_Lorenz.jpgLisa, Amy and Sally all drove up from NYC, and while it is 200 miles, depending on the weather, it can take up to 6 hours to get there, real dedication.  Anyhow, they really made my night along with my family who sent flowers and all those who were at the reception including the press which is always exciting.29_Hilary_Lorenz_Lake_George_Printmaking_InstallationOne year ago I had the great opportunity to make work for Wave Hill Public Garden and Culture Center , so to follow it up one year later adding water,  boats, and new animals and mountains to the mix was a fantastic opportunity. Okay, this clown is Conrad, he is not an official animal in the exhibition.9_Hilary_Lorenz_Lake_George_Printmaking_InstallationI am back in Brooklyn teaching this week, but after next Monday’s class, I will pack up the dogs, and head to Sally’s cabin for Thanksgiving Week with plans to be at the Gallery Saturday November 28. so stop on by if you are in the neighborhood or say, 200 miles!
