Conrad, linoleum block print, now on Etsy.

This is Conrad, one of my two Labradors. He was a rescue as a puppy from North Shore Animal Shelter, NY. Yesterday we had a rough day, Conrad, Homer and I ran into a pack of feral dogs while out on our walk. Conrad got a  bit on his hind quarters.  We spent all morning in the vets office getting him fixed up. Homer was so sad, he just stood stunned and crying after I got the dogs to run away. I have never seen anything like it. But if you know labs, they are happy within seconds of just about anything!

This print is for Conrad, my rough and tumble, used to be afraid of everything dog, now friendly as can be and totally happy-go-lucky, even with big tooth holes in his leg. Conrad is a very special dog. He even likes his print.

I  need a better photo of the goat. I finished after dark and had it hold it up outside to get a shot. It looks like my “selfie as a goat”

Polar Bear

Thank you Carol for recommending a Polar Bear. Finally it is snowing in Abiquiu, NM and the whole landscape is covered in  billowy snow.

This polar bear is printed in a icy blue onto white Rives BFK paper. I also print the bear in black, then cut out the eyes, ears, and nose and glue them, with archival glue, to the white paper. This gives the print a little dimension and the necessary black parts of the bear.

This print will be ready for mailing first thing Monday morning, January 26. I need a little extra time to glue all the tiny pieces on. There are 10 available for $20 each on Etsy and you can order yours now.

A Pony Called Wildfire

If you were a kid growing up in the 70’s, is this familiar? “She comes down from Yellow Mountain, On a dark, flat land she rides…” You need a hint? Here is a great one:

This is a Wildfire inspired print, a childhood memory of a really bad song. Someone really needs to do a remix of this.

Print comes unmatted and unframed, picture of framed work is only an example. Image is 6.5″ x 7″ printed onto Rived BFK paper, 10″ x 8″.

Each print is hand printed by the artist, me, Hilary Lorenz in my studio in New Mexico. Each morning I carve a new animal into my linoleum and print an edition of 10.It is part of my 30 prints in 30 days project when I carve, print, and promote one new print each day. This is print 20. Check back often, they sell out fast!

Elk in the Forest, print 19 of 30

30 prints 30 days, Prints, Small Print Store

elk_framedI don’t know where else you would see an Elk but in the wilderness, and then only if you are lucky. But unless one of my dear followers suggestions a catchier title, “Elk in the Wilderness” will be it. This 10″ x 8″ two color print is now on my Etsy store!

This two color print was first printed with a block of green foliage over the whole 10″ x 8″ piece of Rives BFK paper. Then the Elk was printed in a slightly translucent brown with a hint of green ink. Here is a detail:

All together they make a great pattern, I almost want to print fabric that looks like this:

Today was a pretty remarkable day. I am glad I took the day off yesterday so that I could not only offer you two prints today, but two two color prints at that!

Ladybug fun facts:
1. Ladybug larvae resemble tiny alligators.
2. Ladybugs bleed from their knees when threatened,
3. A ladybug’s bright colors warn predators to stay away?
Weird isn’t it? Well not the bright color warning.

30 prints in 30 days

Thirty prints in thirty days is a project that I began on January 1, 2015 after listening to a 30 day painting challenge podcast. I carve, print and put one print on my Etsy store at the end of the day for $20. Here is how it works:

1. I hand carve a different 4″ x 6″ linoleum block each day.
2. I hand print on a Charles Brand etching press an edition of 10.
3. I write a blog post announcing the print at 8pm EST, 6pm MT.
4. The print is then available on my StoneTrigger Press Etsy store.
5. After 2-3 days of print drying, I sign and number each print.
6. I package each print in a glassine envelope and cardboard.
7. I put it in the mail to you within 4 days.
8. Shipping is $4.75, that covers actual shipping cost, shipping materials, packaging time and helps off-set the cost of a 12 mile trip to the post office.
9. If you are local you can email me and pick up the prints in person.
10. If you want me to hold prints and I know you, I will.
11. If you are ever unhappy with your print, tell me,  I will exchange it.
12. I hope you are having as much fun collecting prints and I am printing.

Capricorn Goat Fish, print 13 of 30

Capricorn Goat Fish

Capricorn Goat Fish

I am doing an early release of the print, because today is my friend Audra’s birthday. In celebration of her birthday I carved a Capricorn Goat Fish, making one print extra special  with 6 bedazzled rhinestones. Maybe by the end of the day I will add another 8, one on each star. Happy Birthday Audra!

This Capricorn print is included in the 30 x 30, but instead of rhinestone each print will have silver glitter on the stars. I need to wait for the ink to dry before applying the glitter. You can take a chance and grab one up now, or tomorrow I will update the photo with glitter!!!! Here is a close up of the goat head with two rhinestones.

Seamore, Print 6 of 30

Seamore

Seamore

In 2002 I was walking out of the “Q” line subway at Canal Street and saw a woman selling quarter size red-eared slider turtles in clear plastic boxes with palm trees, just like the ones my mom bought me 40 years ago. Back then we got the turtles at the Ben Franklin store in Whitehall, MI. The turtles were on a wall with other pets, one most vivid in my memory was a baby alligator. Of all the pets, she never let me get the baby alligator no matter how much I begged. The red-eared sliders never seemed to grow much larger than a quarter before they died, but  this one I was going to do my best to keep alive.

I walked  to my studio, then on Suffolk Street, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I was grinning ear to ear with my new turtle. I would call him “Seamore” as in the “Sea”, water, and “more”, wanting more of it. It helps having dyslexia to put such names, words and letter together that make perfect sense to me.

I put Seamore in my dearly departed dog’s water dish that I have kept around and filled it with distilled water. For the first year I kept him only in distilled water and hand fed him “turtle pellets.” Seamore grew. In fact today Seamore is 12″ in diameter and lives in a 60 gallon long tank with a basking light and water to swim.

Seamore is wildly friendly. He will follow people around, climb into their laps and ask to to pet. He will climb into the dogs bagel shaped bolster bed with them and hang out. No one believes this until they come over.

Conrad, Homer and Seamore

Conrad, Homer and Seamore

When Conrad was a puppy he was not quite sure what to do with Homer, but he did try to play ball.

Conrad_SeamoreIt seems only fitting that on his 13th birthday, Seamore have a print of his own. I carved the linoblock this afternoon and printed the 4″ x 6″ image on 8″ x 10″ paper. There are 10 prints available on Etsy for $20.

Seamore, my friendly turtle is currently keeping my friend Lisa company in the Bronx.

The prints do not come matted or framed, but if you framed it, it might look like this:

Last Print of the Year

Prints

pegasusThis is my last print of 2014. It is a 12″ round double sided print for the exchange portfolio titled Vinyl to be shown at Southern Graphics International Conference in Knoxville, TN come March.

From_VictroliaThe subject of the portfolio with 27 artists, celebrates vinyl records. Knoxville is a great music city inside of a great music state of TN. Artists pulled from some of the music history of Knoxville or their personal relationship with vinyl. Mine, well, let’s just say I took a lot of leeway. But the title, “From my Victrola” is the real deal. I spent my childhood in my grandmothers second floor bedroom listening to 78’s on her Victrola while dressing up in 1930’s clothes. What does that have to do with this? Well who knows but it informed my relationship to music.
VictroliaFor the rest of 2014 I will be glueing this round black paper circle that was printed with the Pegasus wings onto the back of the paper. It will then be complete and shipped out.

Happy New Year!

P.S. None of these prints are available, however beginning January 1, I am launching 30 prints in 30 days, where I will carve and print a new piece each day and sell from for only $20. Stay tuned.
