A new 30 day challenge! I thought about this for weeks now. It is my last 30 days in New Mexico, I will return to NYC on August 1 and I need a kick in the butt to get into the studio.
Why do I need a kick in the butt to work? Well, I broke my foot this month, I was not making art, and I was obsessing about my move back to NY after a glorious year free from teaching in New Mexico. With this challenge, I will make a new watercolor drawing with collage every day and offer it to you my dear friends at an extremely affordable price.
Here is the deal. Each watercolor is 5″ x 7.” It is a combination of watercolor drawing, collaged linocut animals and/or antique italian cut paper. Each one is handmade and unique, there is no edition. There is only one available. Sounds expensive? Nope, I want to make this available for only $47 and it will stay that way for all 30 pieces. Each night at 6pm EST a new drawing will be available. So without further ado here is #1, the Elk. Full details on Etsy where it can be purchased.
5″ x 7″ Elk linocut collaged onto 300 lb. watercolor paper and drawing landscape
Look who came to print
Look who showed up at my house today, none other than Jim Lorenz, my Pop. I have not seen him in 2 years, he lives almost 1500 miles north east of here. I am glad I was home, it was completely unexpected.
He had driven with my older sister, whom I have no idea when the last time I saw her was, from L.A. where she was living. She is moving to Chicago and they decided to pass through.
I gave Melissa and my Pop a quick printmaking demo. He chose to print an Elk.
Inking up the plate
I let him wear my handmade Italian leather apron. He quickly learned to lay out the ink and use the brayer to ink up the plate.
Jim Lorenz putting the paper down
After putting the plate on the press bed, he put down the paper and then the cover board.
The behold, a new Elk print! He made three and took them with him. I could see he got a huge kick out of it, so did I. You can see he is pleased in the top photo.
They only stayed a couple hours, but we did get in a walk at Plaza Blanca and lunch at Bodes. I had already pulled today’s print before they got to my house. I would say, it was a pretty darn good day!
I don’t know where else you would see an Elk but in the wilderness, and then only if you are lucky. But unless one of my dear followers suggestions a catchier title, “Elk in the Wilderness” will be it. This 10″ x 8″ two color print is now on my Etsy store!
This two color print was first printed with a block of green foliage over the whole 10″ x 8″ piece of Rives BFK paper. Then the Elk was printed in a slightly translucent brown with a hint of green ink. Here is a detail:
All together they make a great pattern, I almost want to print fabric that looks like this:
Table of Elk
Today was a pretty remarkable day. I am glad I took the day off yesterday so that I could not only offer you two prints today, but two two color prints at that!
Elk print and Frog print side by side
Both are on StoneTrigger Press Etsy store now. And as always, one print a day, alway 8″ x 10″, always $20 and always made by me with love.
