After 5 long days the installation at Resnick Gallery at LIU Brooklyn is up. But this is only a teaser, no photos. I was too exhausted and in fact I slept 13 hours last night! Here is the description of the show, Monday you get photos:

Linoleum Block Printed and Cut Paper Installation

Hilary Lorenz translates the physical and visceral experience of hiking remote landscapes into visual imagery that takes the form of prints, drawings and enveloping installations. Grounded in traditions of performance walking, Lorenz’s artwork is shaped by the space she passes through during long-distance runs and mountain climbing. Her drawings and prints function as visual mapping specific to each location: abstract, intuitive time-lines that mark a spatial journey of memory and change. As the artist describes, “When I am carving a linoleum block I relive each step that I walked or ran through a single knife-cut.” Even the act of operating a manual printing press supports her strong passion for simple physical repetition.

For the Resnick Gallery, Lorenz continues to build on her previous artwork most recently shown at Wave Hill Public Gardens and Culture Center (2014) and The Lake George Art Projects (21015).

Lorenz begins each artwork with a hike or trail run through the mountains. She has explored Adirondack State Park’s numerous trails along with the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado, California, Australia, and Cameroon, Africa. Lorenz takes these wildlife explorations and turns them into room-size environment consisting of linoleum block-printed and cut paper that is collaged and layered to form mountain, animals and camp sites. Because the work documents her experiences, the artist is careful to portray only the mountains that she has hiked or climbed. The ink drawn animals serves as a record of Lorenz’s treks and simultaneously evokes a wilderness fantasy with bears, coyotes rabbits and moose. In this way, the artist attempts to represent a longing for solitude, quietness and rural moments in the big, bustling city.

Day 8, 30 Paintings 30 Days

30 paintings in 30 days, stonetrigger press

Grey_owl.jpgGull wing grey. That is what I will be painting for the next two to three days. It might not be the watercolor plan that I began the month with, but I have 67.5 feet x 4feet of display cases that need to be painted to create the illusion of a light fog.

Once the fog in dried I will begin a new wilderness landscape construction. Here is the card for the show. exhibition_Postcard.jpg

I did finish a 5″ x 7″ watercolor last night, actually I did it two days ago but I simply did not want to be on the computer last night to get it posted, and that was a wonderful thing. It was the first night that I slept relatively decent. No computer = good sleep!

Lastly, here is a strangle little treat, a photograph of the old shipping container lifts, late at night after dark, that I encountered during our dog walk. I really love these things and I love walking along the water at night.

Have a great weekend!

Day 6, Watercolor 5

30 paintings in 30 days, Uncategorized

This is a lot of water and a little color. This is a weird drawing for me, but when you make a drawing every day, there are good ones, bad ones, regular ones, new ones,  strange ones. I think this falls along the strange catalogy, very washy, very watery.

I was walking the dogs along the piers of NY Harbor. It was below freezing, 19 degrees and the water looked amazing. It was night,  so the water was very dark with just a couple of boats. So I was thinking of last’s night’s dog walk as I did this.

I still have one drawing to catch up which I will be doing tonight. I am waiting until Thursday after 1pm to put them on Etsy. This way I can stay off the computer and just enjoy drawing.

See you tomorrow

Day 3, 30 day painting challenge

30 paintings in 30 days, stonetrigger press

Magic Kingdom available on my Stonetrigger Press Etsy Store.

What a day! After a wonderful morning with friends playing with our dogs in the park, going to Chinatown for dim sum and stopping into my favorite massage place, our bellies are full, our knots kneaded out, and our hearts full from laughing. I then came home and quickly knew I am in a magic place ready to paint my ideal hiking spot.

I would start in the lower right hand corner by my signature, walk the ridge of green until it ended. I would then traverse over to the white notch just above there and climb that ridge line up into the craggy rocks of the first peak. After having a lunch break on the peak I would continue across to the right, to the lower portion of the darkest green of the middle crag and climb up to the top. From there I would spend the afternoon watching the water until the sun set.

I think to think about climbing around in my drawings. I often do that when I am making them. But it is now late in the day and the dogs have to go back out, so I will keep this brief.

Yesterday’s drawing is already sold, but this one is available on my Etsy Store for $20, to whomever get’s there first.

I will see you back here tomorrow with another new piece.

Day 2, 30 paintings in 30 days

30 paintings in 30 days, stonetrigger press

Original_Watercolor_Landscape_LorenzDo you need to brighten up your day? This is day 2 of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. Yesterday when I painted the cows, I thought I would only make animals. Then, today, looking out the windows of my studio into the cold grey weather I had to draw a bright fantasy landscape to bring light and excitement back into my space.

Details of painting

It is  two days into the 30 day challenge so I will just have to wait and see how all 30 days unfold. I thought I would work with a theme but it is nice to leave it open to see what creeps into my work.   Either way, each 5″ x 7″ watercolor, unframed, will be for sale on in my Stonetrigger Press Etsy Store for a mere $20.

Here are a few details:

Size: 5″ x 7″
