Sold-Original Watercolor with Linocut Collage, Beaver -30 DAY CHALLENGE – #7

Original Watercolor, 5″ x 7″ with Collage – StoneTrigger Press ETsy

Ah, the beaver, those semi-aquatic, primarily nocturnal rodents, master engineers that dam up rivers and streams sure are cute little critters. My dogs Conrad and Homer look very much like beavers when they are out swimming.

The beaver is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. I then hand drawn watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble  pigments. At the top are hand cut shapes from vintage Italian  paper.

This is what he would look like in a standard black wood frame. I think this is my favorite. But I also have an example in white. Frames are not included they are only for reference.

Here is the green and yellow drawing in a white frame. He would look super cute in a kids room, a country house, your sea-side cottage, or a wall that demands a smaller size artwork, image 7″ x 5″ displayed in a 12″ x 9″ frame. He is now available on my Etsy Store by clicking here.

7" x 5" Original Watercolor Canoe, 30 Day Challenge

7″ x 5″ Original Watercolor Canoe, Click to Purchase

This canoe takes me immediately back to the Northeast and my fantasy to canoe the entire Hudson River. As a kid I used to peel the birch off the trees and attempt to fabricate a tiny birch bark canoe, it never worked. This canoe, while two dimensional, still takes me to that feeling of paddling down a wilderness river. The canoe is a linoleum block print that is cut out and collaged onto 300 pound Arches Watercolor Paper. I then hand draw watercolor with my favorite Schmincke super high quality natural gums, water-soluble pigments. At the top and bottom are stripes of vintage Italian hand printed paper that are then painted over. If you like wilderness water adventures, this 7″ x 5″ original watercolor is for you.

This is all part of my July 30 day watercolor challenge and it is a a fun challenge. It is exciting to have the pressure of getting each one made and working in such volume forces me to take some risks, and risk in art is always good! As usual this is available at my Stonetrigger Press Etsy Store.

Day two of the 30 day watercolor collage challenge is a Raven. You may remember the linocut raven from the 30 day linocut challenge in January. This is the same raven, cut out and collaged onto 300 pound arches watercolor paper. I then used watercolor to create the landscape and added two “bushes” by collaging hand cut antique Italian paper. There is a lot of great detail.

A new 30 day challenge! I thought about this for weeks now. It is my last 30 days in New Mexico, I will return to NYC on August 1 and I need a kick in the butt to get into the studio.

With this challenge, I will make a new watercolor drawing with collage every day and offer it to you my dear friends at an extremely affordable price.

Each one is handmade and unique, there is no edition. There is only one available. Sounds expensive? Nope, I want to make this available for only $47 and it will stay that way for all 30 pieces. Each night at 6pm EST a new drawing will be available.  So without further ado here is #1, the Elk. Full details on Etsy where it can be purchased.

Michelle and Tom Holland printing at Stonetrigger Press

Today was a great day at Stonetrigger Press, Poet Michelle Holland and Painter Tom Holland came to make prints. I met Michelle and Tom in March and we became fast friends.  I had been wanting them to make a print with me and finally in between our athletic events, Michelle a runner and Tom a cyclist, we made the date.

Just two days ago I bought a gorgeous landscape painting from Tom and I was eager to see how he would treat the linoleum. Michelle, a poet studied art in college and had made prints in the past, so I was excited to see what she would do. Both, amazingly freehanded the drawings onto the blocks, Tom with a brush and ink, Michelle with marker. They carved and in no time,  faster than anyone I have worked with, they were ready to print.

They each made an edition of 10 with 2 artist’s proofs. Here are photos of each of them signing their work.

I am thrilled with the final prints, the two editions are meticulous. Printed onto Magnani Pescia Italian made paper with Gamblin Black Ink plus my secret ingredient. (no, I will not tell you, then it would not be secret), the prints are velvety smooth with rich black ink and a slight embossing.

You can see more of Tom’s work by clicking this link. And if you are near Chimayo, NM you can make an appointment to see paintings  in person.

Michelle’s books include the New Mexico Book Award winning collection, The Sound a Raven Makes, Tres Chicas Press 2007; and Chaos Theory, Sin Fronteras Press, 2009. Last week on Father’s Day I got to hear her read “Not a Sonnet”  in Santa Fe, NM as part of the ReelFathers Project. It was incredibly moving. This video is not from last week,  it was filmed as part of the Poetry Matters on New Mexico Culture Net.

We finished our day with a nice swim at Abiquiu Lake along with Conrad and Homer, my Labradors.

For more information on Tom and Michelle, or if you are interested in their prints you can contact them directly through Tom’s site.

Detail of 24" x 18" Moose Linocut

Detail of 24″ x 18″ Moose Linocut

Finally after more than a month of carving it looks like the moose linocut is ready for a trial printing. I would love to get this baby on the press but I have one problem, I am not suppose to put any weight, at all, on my foot. Two weeks ago today I broke my foot in a race, and, boy has that made life a little less exciting. But fear not, even if I can’t print I can still carve, collage, and paint. In fact I just finished the “Narwhal World” today. I don’t know if I will keep that title but that is what I am currently calling it.

I also went to FedEx and shipped four pieces to the Lake George Art Projects for the exhibition, Art@the Lake. If you are in upstate New York from July 1 through July 27th, come and see the exhibition. It also serves as the annual gallery benefit with over 70 artists. This is going to be a terrific and I am sure you can find some great art to take home.

Lastly, I am making a new personal 30 day challenge of a watercolor/ print collage a day, details on the project will follow in a couple days.

Hilary Lorenz's Travel KitMy travel kit of hand printed journals, a watercolor pad, watercolor, brushes, and UFO Cyclops bag is all packed up. I am going to Albuquerque for a couple of days then on to Roswell for some fierce sporting competitions, a tour of the UFO Museum, and a lot of sweating. It is going to be in the high 90’s all week.

I am currently working on a narwhal, bat collage. weird landscape watercolor. I plan to take that with me and finish it up in Roswell in between running events. More about those running events Thursday on my adventureartist blog.
