This is it, meet the artist day at Wave Hill, November 16 at 1:30. My exhibition has been up since October 18th and I have met many a friend at Wave Hill for a nice tour, but this weekend is the big one, where everyone can come and help me celebrate the completion of this year long project. Be sure to check out the subway construction if you are coming up on the 1 train, driving, bus and metro-north are all options, see the travel page at Wave Hill.

If you have never been to Wave Hill you are in for a real treat. This is a very special place, with a great cafe, great art exhibitions, and beautiful gardens that you can hang out all day in. I hope to see you Sunday, after that I am off to Canada for a couple weeks on a new adventure in artist residencies.

Yesterday I finished the installation of Nomadic Geography, my “interdisciplinary arts project that visually translates the visceral experience of trekking remote landscapes into linoleum block prints, drawings, and room-size installations.”  That is my official one sentence description. I will be doing a talk on November 16 at 1:30, but you are welcome to visit the Garden and Cultural Center any day of the week, exception Monday.  Post  your one sentence description here, or better yet, tweet it!

Printmaking Center of New Jersey Exhibition Opening

Uncategorized

hilary_lorenz_install2With my exhibition open in Kansas, three pieces sold, 17 framed pieces available at the Gallery at Pioneer Bluff, until December 14,  I moved on to New Jersey to install that piece.

I spent all day with my friend John Shorb helping me at the Printmaking Center of New Jersey, cutting, pasting and tacking up 100’s of linoblock printed papers.
pcnj_install3We had a great time but were really tired in the end. John was amazing to work with. The exhibition is curated by Sheila Goloborotko and included artists, Jen Blazina, Richard Hricko, Elizabeth Mackie, Jill Parisi, Hester Stinnett and of course me. I especially love Jill Parisi’s work, we met recently at the Southern Graphics International Conference and I am so happy to be in a show with her. Here is a pic of me deciding what the heck piece goes where. It is all done on site.

hilary_Lorenz_installThe reception is Saturday, October 18 from 1-4pm and the gallery is located at 440 River Rd, Branchburg, NJ 08876, (908) 725-2110. It will be up until December 7, but please try to stop by the reception and say “hi.”

I am so excited. “In the Spirit” my exhibition of 20 linocut collage drawings is currently being hung beautifully at Pioneer Bluffs. The opening is  Saturday from 2-5 and it is during the Fall Festival. Check out all the activities! I want to do some geocaching!

Tonight I head to the Kansas City Art Insitute where I will spend the morning giving a talk and critiquing students. I am looking forward to seeing my friend Laura Berman, the best printmaker/artist in KC!

While at the KCAI,  Conrad and Homer get to hang out with the dog sitter. I already prepared them by taking a nice long swim this morning at Chase Fishing Lake in the beautiful Flint Hills of KS. Hopefully they will be a bit calmer after our 12 hour yesterday.

Drawing #20 Done!

"Shine On" watercolor and collage 10" x 14"

“Shine On” watercolor and collage 10″ x 14″

Spirit animal of the week? That’s right, it is the firefly. This is watercolor collage drawing #20, it will be sent to the framers to meet the other 19 tomorrow. It is a real wacky one, the fireflies  are hand colored linoleum block prints  slightly raised off the surface of the paper as it they are flying. Super Cool! These fireflies are here to remind you to, “shine your light.”

Two pieces have already sold from my studio. They will still be in the exhibition for all to see. These smart collectors knew to buy one now because once at the gallery with the commissions added on, the price rises, and then only climb for there.  So if you even think you might want one, talk to me now. hilary@hilarylorenz.com

Last few days of August

Drawing

It is the 28th of August and I have 19 watercolor drawing collages complete. I just finished  two today.

My spirit animal of the week is a red lizard. Very appropriate. I see dozens of lizards every day in New Mexico’s high desert. Curiously, the lizard helps us see the importance of respecting and remembering our dreams. I am not sure how I feel about that given the dreams I had this week. Lizards also aid us in becoming more detached from situations in your life. This I certainly need as I have had three months of crushing grief from the co-op board of my NYC apartment. As I finished the lizard drawing today, the crying house, the lizard losing it tail, I had to laugh at the simplicity of it all. This Lizard is said to be telling me to move on and quit being attached to what has been. Lizard is proposing immediate change in one or more areas of my life. So,  that must mean only one thing. I have an apartment for sale! So long Rivington Street and Lower East Side and good riddance to the noise and the sad souls of the building, though the good souls I will miss!  This someone has something far more wonderful happening and a big bright wonderful world to step out into! Just follow the lizard! Who can resist a red lizard that just shed it’s tail?

More leaves

Drawing

I am working on my show for Wave Hill . Right now I am in production and testing phase. I printed and cut out, with the help of my friend Clare, about 100, 24″ x 36″ pages of printed leaves. The leaves are based on of the many ivy covered walls at Wave Hill.

Today we continued to cut leaves. I have printed them on brown contractors papers, Japanese kozo that was pre-printed on the back side, and Rives black so there will be a variety of color textures. This is about 1/3 of the leaves.

This 8′ x 8′ covered is being protected by the bear. I don’t know if he will be included, I just like thin there now.  I suspect I have enough cut outs to cover a 10′ x 12′ area. This is be installed in one corner of the gallery.   I am working on a 10′ x 12′ ink drawing of a mountain for a long wall.  The  base of the drawing will  be covered with loads of cut out plant silhouette, I will post photos as it develops. I can’t tell you how great it has been to have a whole year to develop this work.

Lastly, here is Conrad in the weed infested “yard” next to the Abiquiu, NM studio, looking very glamorous in the afternoon sun. This area was a parking lot that I let grow wild and with so much rain this summer it is quite spectacular.
