Michelle and Tom Holland printing at Stonetrigger Press

Today was a great day at Stonetrigger Press, Poet Michelle Holland and Painter Tom Holland came to make prints. I met Michelle and Tom in March and we became fast friends.  I had been wanting them to make a print with me and finally in between our athletic events, Michelle a runner and Tom a cyclist, we made the date.

Just two days ago I bought a gorgeous landscape painting from Tom and I was eager to see how he would treat the linoleum. Michelle, a poet studied art in college and had made prints in the past, so I was excited to see what she would do. Both, amazingly freehanded the drawings onto the blocks, Tom with a brush and ink, Michelle with marker. They carved and in no time,  faster than anyone I have worked with, they were ready to print.

They each made an edition of 10 with 2 artist’s proofs. Here are photos of each of them signing their work.

I am thrilled with the final prints, the two editions are meticulous. Printed onto Magnani Pescia Italian made paper with Gamblin Black Ink plus my secret ingredient. (no, I will not tell you, then it would not be secret), the prints are velvety smooth with rich black ink and a slight embossing.

You can see more of Tom’s work by clicking this link. And if you are near Chimayo, NM you can make an appointment to see paintings  in person.

Michelle’s books include the New Mexico Book Award winning collection, The Sound a Raven Makes, Tres Chicas Press 2007; and Chaos Theory, Sin Fronteras Press, 2009. Last week on Father’s Day I got to hear her read “Not a Sonnet”  in Santa Fe, NM as part of the ReelFathers Project. It was incredibly moving. This video is not from last week,  it was filmed as part of the Poetry Matters on New Mexico Culture Net.

We finished our day with a nice swim at Abiquiu Lake along with Conrad and Homer, my Labradors.

For more information on Tom and Michelle, or if you are interested in their prints you can contact them directly through Tom’s site.

Detail of 24" x 18" Moose Linocut

Detail of 24″ x 18″ Moose Linocut

Finally after more than a month of carving it looks like the moose linocut is ready for a trial printing. I would love to get this baby on the press but I have one problem, I am not suppose to put any weight, at all, on my foot. Two weeks ago today I broke my foot in a race, and, boy has that made life a little less exciting. But fear not, even if I can’t print I can still carve, collage, and paint. In fact I just finished the “Narwhal World” today. I don’t know if I will keep that title but that is what I am currently calling it.

I also went to FedEx and shipped four pieces to the Lake George Art Projects for the exhibition, Art@the Lake. If you are in upstate New York from July 1 through July 27th, come and see the exhibition. It also serves as the annual gallery benefit with over 70 artists. This is going to be a terrific and I am sure you can find some great art to take home.

Lastly, I am making a new personal 30 day challenge of a watercolor/ print collage a day, details on the project will follow in a couple days.

“Buddy” is back! Now on a cinch bag

Buddy is back and this time he is on the front of a heavy duty cinch bag.

This is a custom bag. It is a delicious pink heavy duty canvas bag with the original colors of the “Buddy” linocut. Because it can be difficult to match the ink from the original print, I took into consideration the color and weave of the bag. Once printed I felt Buddy was lacking a  bit of detail, so I went in with a brush and hand painted highlights of white and yellow so that he will really sing!
I also got  my nifty “Stonetrigger Press” stamp so that I am able to stamp each bag making them very unique to the press. Each linocut was hand carved and if you want a custom bag, you have over 50 linocuts to chose from and 5 different color bags all from my Etsy Store.

The Language of Animals

Rabbit Linocut beginning, 24" x 18"

Rabbit Linocut beginning, 24″ x 18″

I was a quiet on the blog this past week, but not quiet in the studio. After a big clean-up, I began this 24″ x 18″ rabbit linocut. It is  half way carved and I hope to complete it by Sunday. The rabbit will be in my exhibition at Lake George Project Space in Lake George, NY, in November. The title of the exhibition is “The Language of Animals.”

The exhibition will be of large prints and drawings collaged onto the walls similar to my Wave Hill exhibition last fall. The biggest difference is all the animals and mountains I plan to draw and print will be from the Adirondack Mountain region.

The gallery is having a  benefit exhibition this summer and I plan to make a whole series of Adirondack Animals in the 5″ x 7″ format I have been printing. Between now and June I will make a new moose, shrew, fox, Canadian lynx, weasel, raccoon, woodcut, beaver, bat, and bobcat. I may also make a new river otter since the last one was so popular. If you have a favorite ADK animal, please let me know. After a short studio break, I will be back in full force doing 3-4 different prints a week!

Completely out of Printmaking Paper, Now what?

Pigment dyed hand printed backpack

I use my weekends to rest from my intensive printing, I have pulled more than 650 prints since January 1 with 60 new carved linoleum blocks. I use the time to run, attempt to be social, I say attempt so that I don’t have to hold myself accountable to actually being in  public, draw and come up with new ideas. Since I have also exhausted my entire paper supply, it is a good time to come up with new ideas. Should I buy more paper OR perhaps heavy duty cinch bags?

I did some mock-up’s today with the coyote and really like them. I love these bags. They are 100% cotton, pigment dyed, heavy cotton webbed straps, a zippered front pocket, 14.5″ wide by 17.5″ tall, 9 different colors. They are really strong, great for books and big enough for picking up groceries, and of course CUTE!

Nine colors of Stonetrigger Press hand printed bags.

I mocked them up with Stonetrigger Press Abiquiu, NM printed under the coyote, but in linocut I can’t print text. I don’t want to go to silkscreen because everyone silkscreens. I want to keep these one at a time linocut printed.  I will work out whether or not I have the press name, and it is possible I print it separate or get a woodblock laser cut to print it. Now there is another good idea.

So if you had a bag what color would you want?

Lisa Studier left this morning and I got into the studio to catch on  a portrait that my dear friend Peggy requested. Honestly, at first I was not so sure I could do a pet portrait. But have already done one for her I welcomed the second opportunity and it was a blast.

The custom linocut dog portrait is a gift for her daughter, who also supplied the photos for me to work from. I drew “Sam” onto a 5″ x 7″ linoleum block, carved him out, and set out to print.

Carving Linocut of Sam

It was a rough day in the studio. It was very cold, colder inside  than outside, some ink colors appeared almost frozen where others were way too runny. I printed and printed and got nothing. I cleaned up, came in the house, and tried again today. And it was perfect. I got a great print of Sam. In addition I made 5 folded gift/greeting cards. These cards are pretty sweet and since it is a gift Peggy can write a message to her daughter in it, plus her daughter will get 4 others she can send out. She can always get more later if she likes.

I am going to offer to make up to 3 dog portraits a month. They can take 10 to 15 hours to make, so doing three a month would be super fun. I am beginning some big 24″ x 36″ linocuts all based on mountains, hiking, wilderness adventure in for my fall exhibition and I need to make sure I leave time for those. They take about 60 + hours to carve, but they will be amazing, just as amazing as little Sam here. You can order a custom dog portrait at my Etsy Store.

P.S. The color is the same on all of them, despite looking different here.  The photos are a bit crappy because they are from my cell phone. I still need to get a new camera.

That’s not a chicken. Nope, it is not. After a great 10 days with Lisa Studier at the Press working on her reduction technique Chicken Prints, she flew back to NYC, and it is back to Print of the Day Project.

What is new is that I swapped out my 4″ x 6″ linoleum blocks for 5″ x 7″ blocks in order to be able to make more detail and more complex prints. The great thing is, while the prints are larger they are only a couple of dollars more. I want to keep them very inexpensive so that people can feel free to collect as many as they like.

Buddy, The Cockatiel, Linocut #39, Print of the Day

30 prints 30 days, Prints, Small Print Store
Detail - Cockatiel Linocut

Detail – Cockatiel Linocut

This is a detail of Buddy of Cockatiel. “Buddy” according to the The Bird Channel is the 3rd most popular name for a Cockatiel after, “Sunny” and “Sunshine.” I thought this one looked more like a “Buddy.”

Buddy, Linocut 10" x 8"

Buddy, Linocut 10″ x 8″

Buddy looks awesome in this frame, his feather color gradually moves from orangey yellow to light yellow, to yellow grey and down to grey. The image is a little over 6.3″ x 4″ wide on 10″ x 8″  Rives BFK paper.

This linoleum block was super fun to carve. In fact I carved three blocks on Sunday, getting a head start to the week. It is going to be a really spectacular print week.

Look at these sweet “Buddy” prints all lined up and drying in the studio. They will be ready to find homes tomorrow. Ten are available on Etsy, as a print of the day project and still only $20.
