Buddy, The Cockatiel, Linocut #39, Print of the Day

Detail - Cockatiel Linocut

Detail – Cockatiel Linocut

This is a detail of Buddy of Cockatiel. “Buddy” according to the The Bird Channel is the 3rd most popular name for a Cockatiel after, “Sunny” and “Sunshine.” I thought this one looked more like a “Buddy.”

Buddy, Linocut 10" x 8"

Buddy, Linocut 10″ x 8″

Buddy looks awesome in this frame, his feather color gradually moves from orangey yellow to light yellow, to yellow grey and down to grey. The image is a little over 6.3″ x 4″ wide on 10″ x 8″  Rives BFK paper.

This linoleum block was super fun to carve. In fact I carved three blocks on Sunday, getting a head start to the week. It is going to be a really spectacular print week.

Look at these sweet “Buddy” prints all lined up and drying in the studio. They will be ready to find homes tomorrow. Ten are available on Etsy, as a print of the day project and still only $20.

Oh, Possum!, print #39, Linocut of the Day

30 prints 30 days, Prints, Small Print Store

framed_linocut_possum
I know it is spelled “Opossum”, but if we were in, say, Australia, it would be “possum” so I took liberties with it’s name. It is also a slightly different animal. I like  saying “Oh, Possum!”. I have a funny, or creepy, depending on how you look at it possum story. It is another kid story.

Growing in Michigan there was a line of trees between our house and the neighbors, pine trees about 10 deep. We used to hide out in the trees. One day I found a grey, dead, hairless, possum. I went home and got a brown paper bag and two sandwich bags. I put the sandwich bags on my hands, I picked up the possum by the tail and put it in the paper bag. I brought it home and my first thought I would dump it on the kitchen floor for my mom to find. I placed the dead grey possum on the kitchen floor and even as a pre-teen, I realizes that was kind of creepy, so I put it right outside the door on our step. I then called to my mom to find it, laughing my ass off when she saw it.

I can’t remember her reaction but I can remember that it was not as strong as I had wished and I regretted not leaving it on the kitchen floor.

It was not until after this stunt that I learned about, “playing possum,” and how there was potential of the possum not being dead when I had picked it up. Since I had never seen one “play possum” I doubt that playing possum looks like a dead possum, but I laugh at the fantasy that it was alive and that when I put it on the kitchen floor it would have run around the house. Now that would be funny!

Possums are up on Etsy, sorry the pictures are not as clean as they should be. My camera finally died so I used my cell phone camera. Looks like it is time to go shopping.

Have a great weekend and Happy Valentines Day. I’ll be back on Monday with lots of great prints!

Wishing Well, Print #37, Linouct of the Day

I woke up last night to the sound of running water. I wanted to ignore it, but being winter, and being the high desert, it was a strange sound. I dragged myself out of bed to see that in fact it was raining. Now the weird thing is until I woke up, I was having a dream about a wishing well, an old fashion stone well with a hand crank attached to a bucket.

I went back to bed, but when I finally got up at 7:00, all I could think about was the stone well. I can remember vague stories and fantasies about stone wells when I was a kid, about the fantasy of escaping my home through some portal in a well, but not much beyond that.

I currently share a well, an underground well with a neighbor, and I always think about what it will take to drill my own well. The wishing well has kind of haunted me all day, before I carved, during my carving, and even now after I printed all 10 prints. Maybe it is premonition of some magnificent even about to unfold in my life. Now that would be something!

Virtue of the Ant, Print a Day Project

“The world would be a happier place if humanity held and utilized the virtues of ants.”  While  most of us avoid ants and may try to kill their homes, ants are extremely industrious. They gather and hunt, they work hard, are patient and co-operative. An ant is able to carry a leaf, a crumb or a dead ant for miles – just to get back home to the anthill.  If an ant has to fight, it will, if an ant has to dig tunnels, it will, and if an ant has to carry leaves for miles, it will, all for the good of the community. If you want to know the virtues of ants you can read more here.

I often thought of myself as a horse, a work horse more specifically, but after reading about ants, with this project alone, I am I qualify with the virtue of the ants.

Pregnant Gerbil on Olive Green background

Isn’t it cute? A pregnant gerbil on an olive green background. I really don’t know if the gerbil is pregnant, but in the 4th grade when Mrs. Seaver offered her students,  “gerbil couples” to take home, I got mine and soon my two gerbils populated into about 200 in record time.

It was very entertaining for a while having all these gerbils. Luckily I always worked, even in 4th grade, so that I could get new aquariums keep my expanding family in. It was really fun at first, then after 100 or so, it was not so fun. But I am still fond of the little critters.

If you read this far I am going to admit something mildly embarrassing. I read my horoscope, in fact I subscribe to one by Susan Blair-Hunt, I have admitted this before, I started last summer, but I still feel a little sheepish. But can something so seemingly innocuous as a horoscope change one’s life? Here is the short version of that story.

Susan’s Monday edition of her daily horoscope gives you an a spirit animal, a color and a number. I had no experience with these, but I liked the weekly animal. Beginning in July 2014, I made it my Monday practice to carve and print my animal of the week, I am a Libra. I collages many of those animals into drawings which were exhibited at the Gallery at Pioneer Bluff in Kansas. Here are 6 of those drawings:

I continue to carve my spirit animal of the week, along with all kinds of other animals, birds and fish during the week. The habit of printing and carving on Mondays, spilled over into every day of the week and I created a small business of selling the prints.  This week my animal is the Lion. The edition of 10 is currently on Etsy and available until the 10 sell out.  If you want to see more of the 11″ x 14″ watercolor collage drawings you can click here:

What will happen on Day 31?

30 prints 30 days, Prints, Small Print Store

Thirty prints in thirty days has been an amazing challenge, a huge amount of fun, and a project that just took off. I will stop it now. What is going to happen next?

I have given this a lot of thought. Those thoughts include, “I would really like to have Saturday and Sunday to work on longer projects, drawings, larger prints, or a “play day” out in the snow. I also want to print linoleum blocks onto soft cotton t-shirts and offer t-shirts.

For the month of February the project will look like this:

1. A new print Monday through Friday, still 8″ x 10″ still $20. 5 prints per week instead of 7.
2. No prints, no posts on Saturday and Sunday
3. I will use the weekend to carve larger blocks for t-shirts and offer 1-shirt a week. I will also offer your choice of color on the t-shirt. This will be a different image from the art prints.

See you on Monday!

Please send me your ideas and thoughts. I love hearing them.
