Oh, Possum!, print #39, Linocut of the Day

30 prints 30 days, Prints, Small Print Store

framed_linocut_possum
I know it is spelled “Opossum”, but if we were in, say, Australia, it would be “possum” so I took liberties with it’s name. It is also a slightly different animal. I like  saying “Oh, Possum!”. I have a funny, or creepy, depending on how you look at it possum story. It is another kid story.

Growing in Michigan there was a line of trees between our house and the neighbors, pine trees about 10 deep. We used to hide out in the trees. One day I found a grey, dead, hairless, possum. I went home and got a brown paper bag and two sandwich bags. I put the sandwich bags on my hands, I picked up the possum by the tail and put it in the paper bag. I brought it home and my first thought I would dump it on the kitchen floor for my mom to find. I placed the dead grey possum on the kitchen floor and even as a pre-teen, I realizes that was kind of creepy, so I put it right outside the door on our step. I then called to my mom to find it, laughing my ass off when she saw it.

I can’t remember her reaction but I can remember that it was not as strong as I had wished and I regretted not leaving it on the kitchen floor.

It was not until after this stunt that I learned about, “playing possum,” and how there was potential of the possum not being dead when I had picked it up. Since I had never seen one “play possum” I doubt that playing possum looks like a dead possum, but I laugh at the fantasy that it was alive and that when I put it on the kitchen floor it would have run around the house. Now that would be funny!

Possums are up on Etsy, sorry the pictures are not as clean as they should be. My camera finally died so I used my cell phone camera. Looks like it is time to go shopping.

Have a great weekend and Happy Valentines Day. I’ll be back on Monday with lots of great prints!

Working on a Fall Exhibition

Uncategorized

I have an exhibition in November at the Lake George Arts Project Courthouse Gallery in Lake George, New York. I am starting work on the artwork this week, and I wanted to share with you my work process.

This is a video of me printing about 4000 leaves for a show I just had in New York at Wave Hill.

After three months of printing leaves, and mountains and bears, and assorted other plants,  I cut them all apart. I love to see how several months of  printing will accumulate enough to  transform a large gallery space.

This is what the final exhibition looked like:

For Lake George I will do a combination of a wilderness installation and several small printed pieces. But as you can see, it is a lot of printing which I love to do. For the next several months in between my smaller sized print a day project, I will post periodically to show you how this exhibition is unfolding. I am pretty excited about it.

Finally if you read this far, I put a few t-shirts on Etsy, you can use yesterdays 20% off code for those as well.

Wishing Well, Print #37, Linouct of the Day

Uncategorized

I woke up last night to the sound of running water. I wanted to ignore it, but being winter, and being the high desert, it was a strange sound. I dragged myself out of bed to see that in fact it was raining. Now the weird thing is until I woke up, I was having a dream about a wishing well, an old fashion stone well with a hand crank attached to a bucket.

I went back to bed, but when I finally got up at 7:00, all I could think about was the stone well. I can remember vague stories and fantasies about stone wells when I was a kid, about the fantasy of escaping my home through some portal in a well, but not much beyond that.

I currently share a well, an underground well with a neighbor, and I always think about what it will take to drill my own well. The wishing well has kind of haunted me all day, before I carved, during my carving, and even now after I printed all 10 prints. Maybe it is premonition of some magnificent even about to unfold in my life. Now that would be something!

Virtue of the Ant, Print a Day Project

“The world would be a happier place if humanity held and utilized the virtues of ants.”  While  most of us avoid ants and may try to kill their homes, ants are extremely industrious. They gather and hunt, they work hard, are patient and co-operative. An ant is able to carry a leaf, a crumb or a dead ant for miles – just to get back home to the anthill.  If an ant has to fight, it will, if an ant has to dig tunnels, it will, and if an ant has to carry leaves for miles, it will, all for the good of the community. If you want to know the virtues of ants you can read more here.

I often thought of myself as a horse, a work horse more specifically, but after reading about ants, with this project alone, I am I qualify with the virtue of the ants.

Pregnant Gerbil on Olive Green background

Isn’t it cute? A pregnant gerbil on an olive green background. I really don’t know if the gerbil is pregnant, but in the 4th grade when Mrs. Seaver offered her students,  “gerbil couples” to take home, I got mine and soon my two gerbils populated into about 200 in record time.

It was very entertaining for a while having all these gerbils. Luckily I always worked, even in 4th grade, so that I could get new aquariums keep my expanding family in. It was really fun at first, then after 100 or so, it was not so fun. But I am still fond of the little critters.

Check out this whole table of panda’s. You probably know that panda’s are from China, but did you know that they grow as large as 250 pounds and eat bamboo almost exclusively? I wonder if that could happen to me, if I ate enough kale?
table_of_panda_linocutsIn planning the future of these daily prints, I did a little printing experiment. What do you think?

Elephant

I want the elephant to be my spirit animal! They walk almost noiselessly, with exceptionally graceful and rhythmic striding, unlike me as I lumber away in my running. Elephants communicate telepathically with herd members as well as other elephants. Whoa, I want to communicate telepathically. Can you hear what I am communication right now? I didn’t think so but it was worth a try.

Elephant

This is a good looking elephant and there are 10 waiting on Etsy for you.

Elephant  fun fact:
Elephants have 4 teeth, all molars.
Elephant tusks point backwards. They use them as weapons and for digging edible roots.
Elephants have emotions that are comparable to human – love, joy, jealousy, rage.
As well as being the largest land animals, they are also among the longest lived, with life spans of 60+ years.
